You do not need to go far from Pittsburgh to have an island wilderness experience. Allegheny Land Trust has acquired the last privately-owned undeveloped island on the Allegheny River.  Launch from 10.7 Marina in Verona paddling 20/30 minutes down river to Sycamore Island. You can walk the path around the island, camp, hang out in your hammock, swim on the smoothie rock beach, have a picnic.
